WHAT ARE RATCHET STRAPS & WHEN TO USE THEM?

Ratchet straps, also known as cargo straps or lashing straps, are used to secure and restrain cargo during transport of large items, including air, land, or sea,
to reduce damage and improve safety. The straps can be tightened using the handle mechanism to adjust tension and secure fastening.

There are a number of different types of ratchet straps or lashing straps available to purchase, and depending on the weight and size of the items and cargo will depend on what version you need. Ratchet strap strength and load capacity will be shown on the label or product description, and is measured in decaNewtons (daN), which gives the user the weight and size that the assembly can securely hold for transportation.

This type of securing equipment is rated by its weight capacity, which can range from 140kg for a light strap, all the way up to 5,000kg (5 Tonnes) for a heavy-duty ratchet strap, therefore, it's important to know the weight of your cargo before making a purchase.

Ratchet Straps FAQs

When should I use a ratchet strap?

Ratchet straps should be used when transporting heavy loads, such as furniture and other large items, to secure items to avoid movement during transit.

When do I need to replace ratchet straps?

The Health and Safety Authority explains how employers and self-employed have legal duties to assess the risks of their activities and provide suitable equipment, information, and training so that drivers and loaders can load vehicles safely.

Visible fraying on the ratchet strap webbing, mildew, or any holes or tears on your, you should stop using them immediately and purchase a new one, as you severely risk them not being fully effective.

Different types of ratchet/lashing straps

The main types of ratchet straps include endless, retractable and cam buckle, all varying in different sizes and capacities. It’s important to purchase the right ratchet strap depending on your load weight and type to ensure loads are secured efficiently and safely.

How do I maintain ratchet strap quality?

Using a small spray of dry silicone spray or WD-40, lubricate your ratchet straps to give more durability and stop the assembly from greasing up and causing stiffness.

When you're not using your Ratchet Straps, it's good practice to store them in a weatherproof dry, and dark container or compartment, so they don't get damaged, and wrap the webbing and straps with a rubber band to stop unravelling.

They can also be modified to protect ratchet strap quality. For example, if you’re carrying heavier loads and sharper-edged items such as steel, concrete, and scrap metal, we recommend using corner webbing sleeves to protect the straps.
