How do I choose lifting equipment?

What does WLL mean?

WLL Stands for Working Load Limit and is the maximum load that a piece of lifting equipment is designed to safely lift under normal operating conditions.

Every lifting accessory, including chain slings, shackles, eyebolts, and hoists, should clearly display its Working Load Limit.

The WLL is determined by the manufacturer following testing and should never be exceeded. Doing so can damage the equipment, increase the risk of failure, and create a serious safety hazard.

When selecting lifting equipment, always choose products with a WLL suitable for the heaviest load you intend to lift, while allowing for any changes in lifting angle or application that may reduce the effective lifting capacity.

What's the difference between SWL & WLL?

SWL (Safe Working Load) and WLL (Working Load Limit) are closely related terms, but WLL is now the recognised standard used by manufacturers and industry regulations.

Historically, Safe Working Load referred to the maximum load that could be safely lifting after applying a safety factor to the equipment's minimum breaking load.

Today, manufacturers typically specify a Working Load Limit instead. WLL provides a clearly defined maximum operating load based on modern testing standards and is the terminology used throughout current lifting equipment standards.

While many people still use SWL, WLL is the preferred term when selecting, inspecting, and certifying lifting equipment.

Do I need LOLER inspections?

If your lifting equipment is used in the workplace, it will usually need to be inspected under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).

LOLER requires lifting equipment and lifting accessories used for work purposes to undergo Thorough Examinations by a competent person at specified intervals.

These inspections help identify wear, damage, or defects before they come a safety risk.

In most cases:

  • Lifting accessories require inspection every 6 motnhs
  • Lifting equipment generally requires inspection every 12 months
  • Additional inspection may be required following exceptional circumstances or repairs
