TOP-SAFETY TIPS WHEN USING LIFTING CHAINS & CHAIN SLINGS

  • Always be sure to inspect the sling before each use for any signs of damage or overloading.
  • Ensure chain legs are not twisted – this can dramatically affect the working load limit and is classed as misuse.
  • Check that the load or connection sits in the center of the hook and never on the top.
  • Never sling over the maximum working load.
  • Never load with a convergence angle over 120 degrees.
  • Never shock-load your chains.
  • Never use chains outside of their temperature ranges.

EXPERT TIP: A great way to check for individual leg stretching/overload is to hang the sling vertically. If each leg is exactly the same length and there are no evident stretches to the chain then the chances are there has been zero overload. In the event of suspected misuse, it is always recommended to seek professional advice and inspection (our team is happy to assist).

LIFTING CHAIN TYPES

Lifting chains can generally be used in a variety of different configurations to create single, double, 3 and 4 leg chains, to increase the capacity of an assembly. They are also manufactured in different grades and material types, which determine their strength, durability, and suitability for specific lifting applications.

For example, Grade 6 Stainless Steel Chain Slings are highly resistant to corrosion and are commonly used in marine and food-processing environments. While higher grades, such as Grade 80 Chain Slings (also known as Grade 8) provide superior strength and wear resistance, and suit heavy duty lifting in construction and industrial operations. BENEFITS OF PURCHASING LIFTING CHAINS FROM LES

  • An attractive price to performance ratio, due to the small price difference compared to grade 8 chains.

  • One dimension smaller than grade 8 chains for many load ranges, offering excellent value.

  • All links and components are easily identified with relevant markings for traceability as all components are coded.

  • High wear resistance for longer life span.

  • Distinctive and individual identity tags to avoid confusion with grade 8 chains.

  • Orange powder coated finish creates a high viability sling for ideal visual identification.

  • Fast and simple assembly with patented shortening element.

  • Safety features on the shortening element helps avoid danger through improperly shortened slings.

  • Fewer components are used on grade 10 chains (as opposed to grade 8) enabling quicker daily/annual inspections.

  • Compatible with grade 8 range, used slings are easy to repair.

  • Grab hooks available with 100% load capacity - shortening sling does not require a reduction in load caused by the effect of hook.

  • Manufactured to ISO 9001 quality standards (EN 1677-1,-2,-3,-4).

  • Ex-stock availability of spares and spare parts.

Chain Sling & Lifting Chains FAQs

Are chain slings compliant with UK safety regulations?

Yes, chain slings sold in the UK must comply with the relevant health and safety regulations, including the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998. Always ensure that the slings you purchase are certified and carry the necessary markings for compliance.

How do I maintain a chain sling?

Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure the safety and longevity of chain slings. Check for signs of wear, such as elongation, rust, or damage to the links and attachments. Clean the chains regularly and replace any damaged components.

Can chain slings be used for lifting in confined spaces?

Yes, chain slings are highly versatile and can be used in confined spaces where other lifting equipment might not fit. Their flexibility and the ability to adjust the length make them an excellent choice for such applications.

Are chain slings suitable for lifting hot or hazardous materials?

Yes, chain slings can be used to lift hot or hazardous materials, but it’s crucial to ensure that the sling is rated for such conditions. Special coatings or materials, like alloy steel chain slings, can provide increased resistance to heat and corrosion.
