Charmaine Jennings

Born in South Africa and proudly calling the UK home for the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to build a career across several industries that have all taught me something different.

My working life began in the mining industry, followed by roles in the industrial and farming sectors, before finding my way into the lifting industry 11 years ago. Looking back, every step has helped shape the way I approach challenges today. I loved it all. From a youngster crawling underground learning the ropes on what holds the ground above miners heads, to what keeps a kudu behind a fence. How to make a secure gap in an electric fence for a little warthog so they don't get hurt on a game farm.

I started in lifting as an external sales representative, building relationships face-to-face and learning the industry from the ground up. I also got to see the UK from top to bottom, how gorgeous indeed. Five years ago, I moved into an office-based export role with LES, working four days a week - and I can honestly say those four days are a whirlwind!

One of the things I love most about exports is that no two days are ever the same. One moment I’m arranging a small lifting point, the next I’m working on rail clamps destined for Hawaii, or container-moving solutions heading to an island in North Africa, moving tuna. Every enquiry brings a new challenge, and that’s exactly what keeps me motivated.

Of course, exporting around the world comes with its own hurdles. Language barriers have certainly tested me over the years, but they’ve also created some of the funniest moments. My customers and I have often developed our own unique way of communicating, and many of those conversations
have ended in laughter. It’s those relationships that make the job even more rewarding.

When the working week comes to an end, life is all about family. Our weekends are spent making as many memories as we can with our three adorable grandbabies, gathering around the braai, and enjoying the great outdoors. Whether we’re out for a walk, away camping, or cheering on the Springboks wherever they’re playing, those moments remind me of where I came from and what matters most.

I’ve learned that when you genuinely enjoy what you do, the challenges become opportunities rather than obstacles. Finding a career you’re passionate about is something special.

As the saying goes, “Nothing will work unless you do.” Those words have stayed with me throughout my career, and I believe they’re just as true today as when I first started.
