Lifting Jack FAQs

What is a lifting jack?

A lifting jack is a mechanical device that is typically used to, either apply great force to an object or to lift heavy loads. They are commonly used to elevate heavy equipment such as cars, structures or palette loads, which is usually done so that something can be placed underneath the object - either to lift it further off of the ground by means of a forklift or crane or to conduct work or repairs from underneath the object.

How do lifting jacks work?

Lifting jacks typically work in one of two ways, either by using hydraulics or by using a screw jack. Both types of jack take a comparatively small amount of force and multiply it to lift a heavy object.

A hydraulic-powered jack transmits the user-applied force to a larger contained space filled with fluid, which multiplies the applied force and enables the lifting of heavy loads. A screw-powered jack uses the much simpler method of mechanical levers to lift objects. When the screw - which is typically attached to a long lever or arm - is rotated, it moves through a nut, causing the load-bearing platform to move up or down, depending on the direction of rotation. The basic principle behind its operation is the translation of rotational motion into linear motion.

What type of lifting jacks are there?

In the UK, the most common types of lifting jacks include hydraulic jacks, bottle jacks, trolley jacks, screw jacks, and forklift jacks, each suited to different lifting tasks.

Do I have to get my lifting jacks inspected?

Yes - under LOLER regulations, you will need to have a thorough examination conducted by a competent person, like a lifting engineer. All of our lifting jacks come with a 12 month manufacturers warranty. Some of our LES Jacks come with a 5 year warranty, such as ou rLES Adjustable Toe Jack.

What weight capacity should I choose for a lifting jack?

You should choose a lifting jack with a capacity that exceeds the total weight of the load you intend to lift, allowing for a safety margin to ensure stable and safe operation.

Are lifting jacks suitable for all vehicle types?

Not all jacks are suitable for every vehicle; you must match the jack type and lifting range to your specific vehicle’s weight and ground clearance.
