SAFETY HARNESS INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

If you are an employer and make use of safety harnesses and general height safety equipment, you have a duty of care to your staff to ensure that all gear is inspected on a regular basis. It is a requirement of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 that all equipment exposed to conditions causing deterioration is inspected regularly. If you don’t follow these regulations, you could be putting your employees in very real danger.

It is stated by the British Standard that any components which are being used for height safety should be examined at least once every twelve months. Often though, manufacturers will recommend that inspections take place more often than this. It’s important that you establish your own inspection regime in order to keep on top of the examinations which need to be carried out. Here are the official pointers for putting together your regime:

List the lanyards and other pieces of equipment which are to be inspected. Make sure it’s clear – use unique IDs
Record the frequency of inspection and the type of inspection required (e.g. pre-use checks, detailed inspections and any additional checks which are needed)
Designate a competent person to carry out the work, and train up others
Have an accessible list of actions to take if lanyards are found to be deficient
Keep a detailed record of inspections
Devise a method of monitoring inspections to ensure that they are carried out correctly and on time
Inevitably, safety harnesses will need to be replaced every once in a while. Whether they’ve failed an inspection or you need some additional harnesses for your workers, Lifting Equipment Store stock a range of premium safety harnesses which you can choose from. They all come with certificates of conformity and are supplied by trusted brands like Tractel, Kratos and Yale. There are harnesses for all purposes and budgets in a variety of shapes and sizes.
